The following is based on information provided by Jerry Honeycutt, in "How to Protect Your Computer from Spyware and Adware."
What is spyware?
Spyware is software that allows third parties to have access to your personal information without your knowledge or permission. This information can be simply the websites that you have visited or even your user name and password. This knowledge allows companies to send you specifically targeted advertisements, again without your permission.
What is adware?
Adware is software that enables advertisements to be displayed on your computer, including those annoying pop ups. Often this software is acquired when "free" software is downloaded by the user.
What are the causes and symptoms?
Most people are unaware that they have installed spyware or adware until their computers begin having performance issues, like freezing up, running very slowly, developing browser issues, or even the hijacking of browser settings so that the home page is changed. Most of the time, installation of the software is done by stealth when an unsuspecting visitor to a website clicks on what appears to be a Windows dialog box to close or cancel it. This action actually allows the installation of spyware that enables a continous flow of ads to your computer and transmission of your personal information.
What can you do to protect yourself?
Your best protection is to be very careful. Here are some tips:
Outdated antivirus programs do not defend against spyware. Be sure that the brand you purchase does.
Check to see if your Internet provider offers spyware protection.
Be very cautious about intentionally downloading any freeware (read the licensing agreement).
Install a pop-up blocker.
If in doubt, never say "yes" when you get a dialog box asking if you wish to install a particular program.
Do install Ad-aware, made by Lavasoft. This program is free and allows you to scan your computer for spyware and adware, as well as cookies.
Mac users usually do not have the worry about the spyware or adware issues as most programs are developed for PCs; howerver, to ensure your Mac's safety, visit the Apple downloads and look into the MacScan program.
